Avenues for Autism shares the incredible journey of those we serve and whose lives have been changed thanks to our generous donors. We hope you enjoy our November 2025 issue of Exceeding the Limits!
I am a single mother of two children, ages one and seven. My seven-year-old has autism along with other disabilities. At home, we have been struggling with some difficult challenges, including aggressive behaviors, refusal to bathe or shower, and resistance with following directions. Hygiene has become a major issue, and it impacts both his well-being and our daily routines.
As a single parent without a support system, it is just me and my boys. I am doing my best to manage everything while also trying to give my child with autism the tools and support he needs to thrive. I want to help him become more independent—for example, being able to transition into sleeping in his own room, practicing better hygiene, and developing routines that make home life more peaceful.
Although there are times that are rewarding, right now many days are very hard. I am constantly looking for new ways to help my son, but with limited financial resources, I am unable to purchase many of the programs, services, or equipment that could make a difference. Receiving support from this fund would greatly help me provide resources that will improve his independence, our family routines, and overall quality of life.
Receiving Suzanne Tyner Autism Fund from Avenues for Autism Scholarship has made a tremendous impact on my family. This support came at a time when we truly needed it, and it has helped create a safer, calmer, and more structured environment for my son and our entire household.
The items provided through this scholarship have been life-changing. The Lego table, activity table, and sensory items have helped my son stay engaged, focused, and able to sit in one place to build, color, and enjoy his activities. Before this, he would move constantly and struggle to stay seated. Now, he has his own designated space for eating, coloring, and playing — something that has helped him develop more routine and comfort in his daily life.
The bath bombs and hygiene kit have made bath time exciting instead of stressful. Watching the bath bombs dissolve motivates him to get in the tub and enjoy the process of keeping himself clean. This has helped him build healthy hygiene habits in a fun way.
The safety equipment, especially the cameras, alarms, and locks, has given me peace of mind I did not have before. As a mother of a child who is prone to wandering, having cameras and secure locks allows me to sleep at night knowing he cannot slip out unnoticed. I am able to monitor him, ensure he is safe, and create a protective environment for both him and his younger sibling.
One of the most meaningful changes has been seeing my two children play together safely. They are now able to build Legos, color, and play with action figures side by side without frustration, overstimulation, or emotional outbursts. This scholarship has helped strengthen their bond and has brought a sense of harmony into our home.
As a single mother with no support system, the stress can become overwhelming. This scholarship helped lift some of that weight off my shoulders. It provided not just items, but relief, comfort, and the reassurance that I am not alone. It helped me show up as a calmer, happier, and more patient mother during a very challenging time.
Every single item we received helped create a home that is safer, more structured, and filled with more joy and peace. I am deeply grateful for the support, compassion, and opportunity this scholarship has provided for my family. It has truly changed our lives for the better — not only for my son with autism, but for our entire family.
Thank you for investing in us and helping us build a stable, loving, and safe environment for my children.
