When Emma arrived in our home in 2017, she carried with her a history no child should ever have to endure. Born at just 21 weeks in 2010, she spent her first three years in foster care. Over the next several years, her needs went unmet through 36 separate children’s services reports. By the time she came to us, Emma didn’t speak; she communicated only through grunts and pointing. Yet even then, she radiated a sweet, giggly spirit that shone through the hardship she had experienced.
With the stability of a loving home and the support of occupational, physical, and speech therapy, Emma began to catch up quickly. She entered school with an IEP, and her care team agreed she should be evaluated for autism. Despite the challenges she continues to navigate sensory overwhelm, difficulty socializing, and struggles with reciprocal communication. Emma has made remarkable progress. Today, you would never guess how her story began.
As the sixth of our seven children, Emma is part of a busy, joyful, and sometimes financially stretched household. Thanks to the Suzanne Tyner Autism Fund, Emma was able to attend Zoo Camp, where she gained confidence, practiced social skills, and enjoyed meaningful hands-on learning experiences. The program had a positive impact on her growth and development while also helping offset costs for our family as we continue to manage multiple medical and therapeutic expenses. We are thankful for the opportunity for Emma to build independence, strengthen friendships, and continue developing important life skills in a supportive environment. This was made financially possible through Avenues for Autism.
