Avenues for Autism shares the incredible journey of those we serve and whose lives have been changed thanks to our generous donors. We hope you enjoy our December 2025 issue of Exceeding the Limits!

Kendyl was evaluated for and diagnosed with autism at age 7. While in high school, Kendyl was a member of the choir all four years, being awarded the Directors Award her senior year.  Her final performance of her high school career took place with her choir classmates on the stage in front of thousands of people to help kick off her school’s graduation ceremony.  Kendyl volunteered at the public library in Bowling Green, the 577 Foundation in Perrysburg, and the food bank at the Perrysburg Heights Community Center.  In spite of anxiety related to social situations, Kendyl just finished her third year as a ZooTeen in the ADaPT program at the Toledo Zoo.  During her senior year, Kendyl was an active member of Improveneers, an improv group designed to work on social skills run by Bowling Green State University students.  She recently participated in Open Spot Theater which is a theater program specifically for individuals with disabilities, and just this past summer, Kendyl was part of the Findlay Civic Chorale and performed at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts in the culminating concert.

Beyond high school, Kendyl dreamt of attending college.  However, programs for individuals with autism and other disabilities are not degree programs, which means Kendyl is not eligible for grants or other financial aid through the school. Students must rely on self pay or private scholarships to help them pay for collegiate programs. Thank you to the Susan Tyler Scholarship for helping Kendyl afford this experience!

Since starting, Kendyl has had the opportunity to explore her potential and grow in so many ways.  She has improved her independence, communication, and social skills and explored new vocational tasks.  Kendyl’s experiences thus far have changed her forever, and as she moves on to the next stage of her training, the skills and confidence she gained will help her get the most out of all her future opportunities.
