Avenues for Autism shares the incredible journey of those we serve and whose lives have been
changed thanks to our generous donors. We hope you enjoy our April 2026 issue of Exceeding the
Limits!

Joey has faced challenges from a young age, including sensory-seeking behaviors and self-
harm. Our journey toward an autism diagnosis involved occupational therapy, speech therapy,
and counseling, eventually leading to a definitive diagnosis after much waiting and evaluation.
Amidst this process, we discovered horseback riding, which quickly became a turning point for
Joey. Unlike other activities, riding horses brought him joy, boosted his confidence, and helped
him express himself more freely. He now continues to improve, learning to jump ground poles
and achieving new goals.

Last year, to continue his horse riding, I applied and received funds from the Suzanne Tyner
Autism Assistance Fund to help offset our family costs. Riding horses has become a huge part
of Joey’s life. He has a deep affection for animals, feels relaxed in their presence, and
communicates openly when he’s around them. He has now advanced to where he has done 3
horse shows unassisted. Watching him ride brings me so much joy. I feel like it’s a place where
Joey feels free and at peace, almost heavenly.

Along with the funding for horseback riding, Joey recently received funds to offset the cost of
vision therapy. Joey has struggled with wearing glasses from a sensory perspective. As many of
you know, these sensory issues can really impact day-to-day. With this vision therapy he should
be able to get close to 20/20 vision without glasses! Hopefully improving his reading and overall
academic confidence. So far, he has been enjoying the sessions and willingly doing his
exercises. The program is out of pocket and quite costly, so we are very grateful for the help
financially!
