Avenues for Autism shares the incredible journey of those we serve and whose lives have been changed thanks to our generous donors. We hope you enjoy our August 2025 issue of Exceeding the Limits!
My son Nick and I left our entire lives behind to create a better opportunities for the two of us. At the time we left, I knew that Nick was a bit behind developmentally, but I did not know he had autism until later that year when he was diagnosed at 3 years old.
Nicholas is now 6 years old. He’s incredibly bright, imaginative, and full of life. He loves building things with his Legos, playing hide and go seek, and has a laugh that lights up a room. But he also faces daily challenges with communication, sensory sensitivity, and emotional regulation. Transitions and new environments can be tough, and he often needs extra support to feel safe and understood.
As his mom—and as someone who also lives with ADHD—I’ve had to become both his biggest advocate and his full-time support system. I’ve adjusted every part of my life to make sure Nicholas has what he needs to grow and thrive. It hasn’t been easy doing this on my own, but every step of progress he makes reminds me why I keep going.
Thanks to the Avenues for Autism Suzanne Tyner Fund, Nick was able to enjoy a safe, supportive haven at Kaitlyn’s Cottage and attend an inclusive summer camp program. The scholarship made it possible for him to be in an environment where his individual needs were not only met but truly understood. It gave him the chance to experience joy, connection, and a sense of belonging. As a parent, it brought immense peace of mind knowing he was safe and cared for. This support has meant more than words can fully express — it gave also gave us both the gift of inclusion, and hope.
